Designing a Hunting Jacket for Cold-Weather Markets
A hunting jacket that works in Florida is not the same product as one for Norway. Selling into cold-weather markets — Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, Northern UK — means making a set of specific design decisions early. Get them wrong and you get returns, bad reviews, and a brand that doesn't get reordered.
Here's the checklist we walk every cold-market client through before sampling.
1. Outer fabric — weight is the wrong first question
Most briefs open with a GSM figure. It is the wrong place to start, because weight on its own does not tell you how a fabric behaves. A dense tight weave and a lofted knit at the same weight do completely different jobs.
Start instead with what the outer has to survive, then let the weight follow:
- Ripstop — the general-purpose outer. Reinforcing threads cross-hatched through the weave stop a snag becoming a tear. Nylon for maximum strength, polyester for colour retention and price. Specified by density (300T and above) as much as by weight.
- Softshell — a stretch woven face bonded to a microfleece backing, typically in the region of 280 to 450 gsm. Blocks wind, sheds light rain, stays quiet and flexible. For most cold-weather hunting ranges this is the sweet spot.
- Canvas and twill — cotton, poly-cotton or 60/40. Heavier than a synthetic of equal strength, and you accept that for the quietness and the traditional look. Frequently used as a facing panel over a lighter body rather than for the whole garment.
The genuine mistake we see is not underspecifying weight — it is specifying one heavy outer for a hunter who walks in and then sits still. Those are two thermal problems and one garment solves neither. A lighter shell over a proper mid-layer beats a single heavy jacket in almost every cold-wet scenario. 2. Membrane and waterproofing
This is where pricing diverges most, and where the biggest specification errors happen.
- 5,000 mm — light rain, short exposure, a hunter who is moving
- 10,000 mm — the sensible general-purpose figure for most hunting outerwear
- 20,000 mm — sustained rain, sitting still, or pressure from a pack strap or a kneeling knee
Two things worth being clear about. First, higher is not automatically better: every increase in waterproofing costs breathability, and in cold weather a hunter soaked from the inside by their own sweat is in more trouble than one who is slightly damp from rain.
Second, a DWR finish is not waterproofing. It is a surface treatment that makes water bead on the face fabric, which stops the fabric wetting out and going heavy. It wears off with abrasion and washing, and how long it lasts depends on the finish, the fabric and how the garment is treated — so put reproofing instructions on the care label rather than a promise in the marketing. The membrane behind the face fabric is what actually holds water out under pressure.
3. Insulation
We specify synthetic fill on hunting programmes, and the reason is practical rather than commercial: synthetic keeps usable warmth when damp and survives being packed away wet. Natural down is warmer per gram and tests better in a laboratory, but it collapses when wet and a wet down jacket stuffed into a pack overnight is close to useless the next morning. Cold-wet markets — Scandinavia, coastal Canada, northern UK — are exactly where that failure happens.
Fill weights start at around 150 gsm and rise with the season. As a rough guide: a lighter fill for active hunting where the wearer generates their own heat, a heavier one for stationary hunting where they do not.
The alternative route to warmth is fleece, at 280 to 300 gsm and up to high-pile sherpa. It gives less warmth for its weight than fill, but it is the quietest face we work with — which is why it dominates stand-hunting ranges, where the hunt is lost to sound long before it is lost to movement. If your customer is sitting in a stand rather than walking a ridge, that trade is usually worth making.
One specification trap: on a fleece or a knit the gsm figure is the fabric's own weight, while on an insulated garment it is normally the fill weight. They are not comparable, and reading one as the other is how a brief produces a jacket twice as heavy as intended.
4. Seam Sealing
A 20,000mm waterproof rating means nothing if water leaks through the stitch holes. Three options:
- No sealing: avoid for cold/wet markets — instant returns
- Critical seam taping: just the shoulders, hood, chest pockets — budget-friendly
- Fully taped seams: every seam sealed with heat tape — premium standard
For the Scandinavian and German markets, fully taped is non-negotiable. Don't try to save $3/piece here.
5. Hardware Quality
Zippers fail more than fabric. For cold weather:
- YKK Aquaguard zippers — water resistant, the industry standard
- Storm flaps over main zip — wind/water break
- Pull cords on zippers — operable with gloves
- Brass or coated metal snaps — won't rust in wet conditions
6. Hood Design
Often overlooked. A bad hood ruins a $200 jacket. Required features:
- 3-point adjustment (face, back, sides)
- Stiffened brim (water runs off — doesn't drip into face)
- Generous size to fit over a cap or beanie
- Removable or roll-away for warmer days
7. Colour & Camo Strategy
Cold-weather markets have specific preferences:
- Scandinavia: earthy greens, browns, dark olive — practical over flashy
- Germany & Central EU: classic loden green, forest tones
- USA & Canada: blaze orange (legal requirement in many states), Realtree / Mossy Oak camo licensed patterns
- UK: waxed cotton browns and tweeds (driven hunt traditions)
If you're selling globally, plan a 3-4 colourway range per style. Keep camo licensed patterns for markets that demand them.
8. Fit and mobility — the returns nobody blames on fit
A cold-weather jacket is worn over layers, and a jacket graded as if it will be worn over a shirt will be reported as "runs small" no matter how good the fabric is.
Three things to specify rather than leave to chance:
- Layering allowance. State what the jacket is expected to go over. The chest and the armhole are where it matters; a shell that fits over a mid-layer everywhere except the armhole restricts exactly the movement that counts.
- Arm articulation. A shooter raising a rifle should not pull the hem up. Pre-curved sleeves or an underarm gusset solve it; a flat two-piece sleeve does not.
- Back length. Sitting for hours exposes the lower back. Ranges built for stand hunting are usually cut longer at the back than the front, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than inheriting it from a block.
Grading also shifts by market — US, EU and UK charts differ, and a garment graded for one and sold into another produces returns that look like a quality problem but are a specification problem.
9. Pockets that match the hunt
Pocket placement is where a jacket stops being generic. It is decided by what the wearer is carrying and what else they are wearing.
Chest pockets need to clear a pack's hip belt and its sternum strap, which is why hand-warmer pockets set low are useless on a jacket intended for anyone carrying a pack. A shotgun-shell pocket wants a wide opening that can be worked one-handed, and a call pocket wants to be reachable while seated. Anything intended to be used with cold hands needs a pull that works with gloves on.
Then decide what happens to the pocket in the rain: a zip under a storm flap, a water-resistant zip, or a drainage eyelet at the bottom if it will inevitably take water.
10. Noise — the specification most briefs forget
For anything sold into stand or stalk hunting, how the garment sounds is a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have. A jacket that performs perfectly and rustles has failed at the only moment that mattered.
Noise comes from the face fabric, but also from hardware knocking, a stiff storm flap and a hood brim moving against a collar. If quietness matters for your market, say so in the brief in those words — it will rule out several otherwise sensible fabrics before they reach the sample, which is much cheaper than discovering it afterwards.
11. Care labelling and reproofing
Two practical points that affect reviews more than they affect production.
A membrane garment washed with ordinary detergent and fabric softener loses its water repellency quickly, and the customer will report it as the jacket failing rather than as a washing problem. Say plainly on the care label how to wash it and that the DWR needs periodic reproofing.
Care label content is also a legal requirement in most markets, and the rules differ: fibre composition in the local language across the EU, bilingual English and French for Canada, country-of-origin marking for the US. That is a customs and compliance question rather than a design one, and it is worth confirming for each market you sell into before the labels are woven.
The Sample-First Rule
