What a waterfowl
garment has to survive

Wet is the default, not the exception

A DWR finish alone is not a waterfowl garment. Standing in a flooded timber hole or a layout blind means sustained contact with water, so the shell needs a genuine waterproof-breathable membrane and taped seams — otherwise the garment wets out at the shoulders and the insulation stops working exactly when the bird decoys in.

Down fails when it is soaked

Natural down loses nearly all its loft when wet and takes a long time to dry. That is why we specify synthetic insulation on waterfowl programmes — it keeps a usable share of its warmth damp, and it survives being stuffed wet into a bag at the end of a shoot.

You sweat walking in, then sit still freezing

The hardest problem in waterfowl is the temperature swing between hauling decoys and sitting motionless for three hours. Breathability and a venting option matter as much as insulation weight, or the sweat you generated walking in becomes the reason you are cold later.

Season Range

One season, three
different garments

The single most expensive assumption in a waterfowl brief is that "waterfowl" describes one set of conditions. It describes a range that runs from shirt-sleeve warm to ice in the decoys, and a garment built for the middle of it fails at both ends.

Early season is a heat problem

Opening weekends are often warm and humid, with insects and a lot of walking. What sells here is a light, quick-drying shell over a breathable base — an insulated parka is unsellable in September no matter how good it is. Brands that carry only a late-season jacket give away the first six weeks of the season.

Mid-season is where the volume is

The bulk of the market sits here: cold, wet, sustained exposure. This is the membrane-and-taped-seams garment with moderate synthetic fill, and it is the piece worth getting exactly right because it will outsell the rest of the range together.

Late season punishes shortcuts

Divers and big water in January mean freezing spray, ice on the cuffs and long motionless sits. Fill weight goes up, but so does the need for the shell to still breathe — a hunter who sweats breaking ice at dawn is in trouble by mid-morning if the garment cannot release it.

The Wader Interface

The problem no other hunt
has to solve

Waterfowl is the only hunting category where the jacket has to work with a second waterproof garment already on the body, and this interface is where most complaints originate.

Hem length is a specification, not a style choice. A jacket cut to hip length sits below the top of chest waders and channels water straight into them. Cut it to clear the wader belt and it works; cut it "for warmth" and the customer is wet from the inside. State the intended wader height in the brief.

Cuffs decide more than the fabric does. Water travels up a sleeve far faster than it comes through a membrane. Reaching into water for a bird puts the cuff under the surface, so an adjustable storm cuff with an inner elastic gasket is worth more here than an extra 5,000 mm of hydrostatic head.

Bulk at the shoulders costs you the shot. The garment is worn over waders and often a wader jacket, and mounting a shotgun through that stack is the moment a badly graded jacket is judged. Grade for the layered body, articulate the shoulder, and keep the pocket positions clear of a wader belt and a shell bag.

Hearing matters more than in any other hunt. Waterfowl is a called hunt — the hunter is listening and talking to birds. A hood that closes around the ears or a collar that rustles against a hood is a real complaint, not a detail. A soft, low-noise collar lining and a hood that turns with the head are worth specifying deliberately.

Field Complaints

What comes back, and
why

These are the failures that generate returns and one-star reviews in this category. Each is a decision someone made at tech-pack stage.

"It leaked at the shoulders." Almost always untaped or partially taped seams, or a DWR-only shell sold as waterproof. Rain and spray load the shoulders hardest because that is where the water lands and sits.

"The zip failed." Waterfowl hardware lives in mud, grit and often salt. A standard coil zip packed with silt will bind, then break. Specify the zip type and, for coastal programmes, its corrosion behaviour — this is a component decision, not a fabric one.

"It was too heavy to walk in." Usually a late-season fill weight sold as a general-purpose jacket. Splitting the range by season fixes it; adding vents to an over-insulated jacket does not.

"The camo looked wrong." Birds circle overhead and see reflection before they see shape, so sheen defeats a pattern faster than the pattern itself matters. A matt face finish and a low-lustre fabric do more for concealment here than any amount of artwork detail. None of this is exotic. It is the difference between a garment specified by someone who has sat in a flooded timber hole and one specified from a photograph.

Questions about waterfowl programmes

What waterproof rating do you use for waterfowl apparel?
We specify membranes from 5,000 mm up to 20,000 mm with fully taped seams, matched to your price point and market. For serious waterfowl programmes we normally recommend the upper half of that range, because the hunt involves sustained water contact rather than occasional rain.
Why synthetic insulation instead of down?
Down collapses when it gets wet and dries slowly, which is the wrong behaviour for a hunt that happens in and around water. Synthetic fill keeps a usable amount of warmth when damp, dries faster and tolerates being packed away wet.
Can you produce waders or wader-compatible jackets?
We do not manufacture waders. We do build jackets patterned to sit correctly over a wader top — shorter body length, higher pocket placement and a hem that does not bunch at the wader belt. Tell us at tech-pack stage and we cut to it.
Can you print a timber or marsh camo pattern we own?
Yes. Send your artwork and we print it via dye-sublimation on polyester or source custom-printed fabric for other bases. Licensed patterns are possible if you hold the licence.
