The measurement customers
cannot articulate

Trousers generate more fit returns than any other garment, and the complaint is almost never about the measurement that is actually wrong.

The rise is the hidden variable. Front rise and back rise decide where the waistband sits and whether the trouser stays put when the wearer squats, kneels or sits. A trouser with too short a back rise pulls down at the waist every time the wearer bends — and the customer reports it as "the waist is too big" or "they slip", because rise is not a word most people own. Specify front and back rise separately in the tech pack, and check them on the sample.

Thigh and knee circumference decide how it looks. Two trousers with identical waist and inseam can read as completely different garments depending on the taper. State the thigh and knee measurement rather than describing the fit as "regular", which means something different to every factory.

Inseam needs options, not an average. Offering a single leg length in each waist size guarantees returns at both ends. Regular and long — and in some markets short — is the practical minimum for a field trouser.

Construction

Reinforcement belongs
where the load is

Adding heavier fabric everywhere is the lazy answer: it makes the trouser hot, stiff and expensive without making it last longer where it actually fails.

Knees and seat. These are the two panels that take abrasion under load — kneeling on grit, sitting on rock, sliding down a bank. A second layer here, shaped to the bend rather than laid flat, is worth more than a heavier fabric across the whole garment. If knee pads are expected, the internal pocket has to be positioned for a bent leg, not a straight one.

The crotch gusset. A diamond gusset moves stress off the four-panel seam intersection and roughly doubles the range of motion. It costs one extra piece and a minute of stitching, and its absence is the single most common cause of a split seam.

Articulated knees. A darted or panelled knee is shaped in the bent position, so the trouser does not pull tight across the kneecap when the wearer climbs or kneels. On a field trouser this is not a luxury.

Bar-tacks at every load point. Belt loops, pocket mouths, the base of the fly and the corners of cargo pockets. Plain stitching at these points unpicks itself over a season.

Waist & Leg

The two ends that decide
the reviews

The waistband is the most-complained-about component on any trouser. Decide deliberately between a plain belt-looped waistband, an internal elastic section for movement, or a side-adjuster tab. Elastic at the back with a flat front is the common compromise on field trousers, and it forgives a great deal of grading error. Specify the elastic width and quality — a waistband that loses recovery ends the garment.

Belt loops have to fit a real belt. Loops sized for a 25 mm belt will not take a 45 mm field belt, and hunters and workers use wide belts. Ask what belt the customer wears.

The leg finish sets the use case. A plain hem is simplest; an internal drawcord or elastic lets the leg be closed over a boot; a zip or press-stud ankle lets the trouser come off over footwear; a boot-cut hem is designed to sit over the boot rather than in it. Each suits a different customer and they are not interchangeable.

Pockets are judged when seated. A cargo pocket that cannot be reached sitting down, or that dumps its contents when the wearer kneels, is a design failure. Angled openings and a closure — flap, zip or both — are what make them usable.

Fabric

What to build them
from

Ripstop is the general-purpose answer: reinforcing threads cross-hatched through the weave so a snag stops rather than running into a tear. Nylon for maximum strength, polyester for colour retention and price.

Softshell gives wind resistance, water repellency and stretch in one fabric, and it is quiet — which matters for hunting trousers specifically.

Stretch blends, typically around 92 percent polyester with 8 percent elastane, are specified where range of motion decides comfort. On a trouser this is usually worth the small cost, because the knee and seat are exactly where restriction is felt.

Canvas and poly-cotton are heavier for the same strength but quiet and traditional, and they are frequently used as a facing panel on the front of the thigh rather than for the whole garment.

Common questions.

What is the minimum order for trousers?
30 pieces per style and colourway. Volume pricing improves from 100 pieces and again above 500.
What size run do you produce?
S to 3XL is our standard run, and grading shifts to match your market — US, EU and UK charts are not the same. We recommend offering regular and long inseams as a minimum, because a single leg length in each waist size produces returns at both ends.
Why do my trousers slip at the waist even though the size is right?
Usually the back rise is too short. When the wearer bends, kneels or sits, a short back rise pulls the waistband down. Customers report it as a waist problem because rise is not a term most people use. Specify front and back rise separately and check both on the sample.
Can you add reinforced knees and a knee-pad pocket?
Yes. We specify a second shaped layer at the knee and seat, and an internal pad pocket positioned for a bent leg. A flat patch over a straight-leg knee bunches when the leg bends and wears through at the fold, so the shaping matters.
What is a crotch gusset and do I need one?
