How to Vet a Private Label Manufacturer Before You Wire a Deposit

Anyone can send a professional-looking PDF and a few stock photos. Before you wire a deposit to a new factory, here's what's actually worth checking.

1. Ask for Real Factory Photos or a Video Call

Stock photos and rendered "factory tours" are a red flag. A real manufacturer can show you their own floor — departments, machines, people working — not generic industry photography. If a supplier won't get on a video call to walk the floor, that's worth noting.

2. Check Business Registration

A real manufacturer is a registered company, not just a WhatsApp number and a trading name. Ask for registration details (in Pakistan, that's an SECP registration and an active NTN with FBR) — a legitimate factory will share this without hesitation.

3. Test Response Speed Before You Order

How a supplier communicates before the deposit is the best predictor of how they'll communicate after it. Slow, vague replies during sourcing usually get worse once payment has cleared.

4. Ask About NDA and IP Protection — Before You Send a Design

You should never need to ask twice. A factory serious about private label work will offer a mutual NDA before you send a sketch or tech pack, without you having to push for it.

5. Start Small

A manufacturer confident in their own quality will happily start at a low quantity so you can test the relationship before committing to volume. Refusing to go below a very high minimum on a first order is worth questioning.

6. Look for a Sample-Before-Bulk Process

Bulk production should never start until you've approved a physical sample. If a factory pushes straight to bulk without a sampling step, there's no checkpoint to catch a problem before 500 pieces are already cut.

None of this guarantees a perfect partner — but checking these six things before you wire anything filters out most of the risk.
